INFLAMMATION

inflammationInflammation is the primary tool our immune systems use to protect us from foreign invaders and to help us heal after injury.

If the immune system is out of balance inflammation can become chronic and lead to joint damage and systemic disease. This is a delicate balance and needs to be factored in to the diagnosis and treatment of TMJD. This is true of both isolated TMJ injuries and TMJD with co-morbid conditions such as Lyme disease and many of the conditions mentioned in the ‘Chronic Inflammation’ post below.

Inflammation can be addressed in many ways including, but not limited to, nutritional support, physiotherapy, behavior modification, NSAIDS and, when absolutely necessary, antibiotics.
